A Place to Start, at Your Pace

It can be difficult to know where to turn—or whether it is “serious enough” to ask for help. At Salem County Women’s Services, we believe every person deserves to be heard, believed, and treated with respect.

Our domestic violence services in Salem County and sexual assault services in Salem County are designed around safety, choice, and individual needs. We support people of all backgrounds, including people of all genders, ages, identities, abilities, cultures, and life circumstances. You do not have to have every detail figured out before contacting us. A conversation can simply be a way to learn about available options.

Free, Confidential Support—Day or Night

SCWS offers 24/7 crisis support for people who need someone to talk with in the moment. A crisis advocate can listen, help sort through immediate concerns, and share information in a calm, nonjudgmental way. Whether a person is seeking domestic abuse help in Salem County, sexual violence support, or guidance for supporting a friend or family member, reaching out is a meaningful first step.

Confidentiality matters. Our team works to create a space where people can speak openly and make informed decisions. Contacting SCWS does not commit someone to shelter, counseling, law enforcement involvement, court, or any other path. The choices remain theirs.

Safety, Shelter, and Housing Support

Safety can look different for every person and family. SCWS can help individuals think through personalized safety planning in Salem County, including practical steps that may help them feel more prepared at home, at work, online, or while considering a change in living arrangements.

For those who need a safer place to stay, we can discuss confidential shelter and emergency housing assistance. Our advocates can also help explore longer-term housing resources and referrals when appropriate. There is no one “right” decision or timeline. Our role is to provide support and information, not pressure.

Counseling for Adults, Children, and Families

Healing does not follow a schedule. SCWS offers free confidential counseling in Salem County for adults and children affected by domestic violence or sexual assault. Counseling is trauma-informed and centered on each person’s goals, whether that means finding space to process feelings, rebuilding a sense of stability, or identifying supportive next steps.

Children and young people can also be affected by violence in their homes or communities. Our team provides compassionate support that recognizes their experiences and developmental needs. Families are welcome to ask questions about children’s counseling, youth trauma support, and other available resources.

Advocacy Through Medical, Legal, and Court Processes

Medical, legal, and court-related processes can feel unfamiliar or overwhelming. SCWS advocates can explain options and offer support for people who choose to pursue them. This may include legal advocacy related to domestic violence, assistance preparing for court, information about restraining-order options, and court accompaniment in Salem County.

We can also provide hospital or police accompaniment for survivors who want that support. An advocate’s role is not to decide what someone should do. It is to offer information, help reduce isolation, and stand alongside them as they navigate choices that are theirs to make.

Resources, Education, and a Stronger Community

SCWS connects survivors and families with helpful referrals and local resources, including services that may address housing, health care, legal needs, financial concerns, and other practical challenges. We also provide community education and outreach throughout Salem County because prevention and awareness are shared responsibilities.

Through education, partnerships, and conversations, we work to help neighbors, workplaces, schools, and community groups better understand how to respond with care. Supportive communities make it easier for people to seek help and harder for anyone to feel alone.
